Nepeta Leijon. Never a favorite character of mine, always took the backseat— she got very small focus in act 5 part 1, was not as dynamic as the others, she was so normal that I overlooked her. Until her red feelings for Karkat became known to us, I didn’t really care about this over-energetic cat girl who seemed to be the worst kind of fan. When she died, I was worrying more about Gamzee’s crazy state and the others. But then I learned the story of the ancestors, and like many of you, my heart broke. I realized then that Nepeta had spent her whole life before Karkat with this sense of emptiness, all this love in her heart with no one to give it to. Then she knows he exists, and can direct it toward him. He’s not the kind-hearted troll his ancestor was though, he’s a foul-mouthed killer who doesn’t pay her the time of day. Regardless, she continues to love him. It’s not the actual way she’s portrayed, or even the story of the Signless that gave Nepeta a special place in my heart, but one song, and one picture.
Serenade: the song dedicated to Nepeta’s life. A serenade is described as “a complimentary performance of vocal or instrumental music in the open air at night, as by a lover under the window of his lady.”
Perhaps Nepeta’s last words were a one sided roleplay to the stone she died on. While Nepeta is dying, she draws Karkat beside her with her own blood. He’s got a small smile, and his hand rests beside hers as if they’re merely sleeping side by side.
As if to say, “Rest in peace, Nepeta.”
